Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already gave itself a burst of comic energy with Season 4's addition of Ghost Rider, and now another comic hero is confirmed for the series. Following a few hints in last week’s “Meet the New Boss,” S.H.I.E.L.D. confirms an all-American identity for Coulson’s new Director, “Jeffrey.”

You’re warned of potential Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spoilers from here on out, but where use of the name “Jeffrey,” talk of ties to Marvel’s past and a few Captain America references tipped off many, Entertainment Weekly made it official. Jason O’Mara is playing Jeffrey Mace, a tweaked version of Marvel comics’ Patriot, an occasional Captain America stand-in.

Here’s how EW describes the character’s history, which has since been tweaked with an Inhuman (and uncertain age) element:

Created in the 1940s, when he first appeared in The Human Torch #4, the Patriot was a former reporter who was inspired by Captain America to become a superhero, despite his own lack of powers. Mace founded the Liberty Legion and eventually became the third Captain America.

As of yet, it’s impossible to say whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will use any of Mace’s actual ‘40s backstory (it’s unclear if the character is a recent Inhuman, or a powered person given extended life decades earlier). Season 4 is also sitting out this week, due to the Vice Presidential Debates, so it could be some weeks yet before we get answers.

In the meantime, check out the latest teaser below, and get to speculatin’ on Patriot’s Season 4 presence.
