Bono is many things: Longtime frontman of U2, philanthropist, sunglasses enthusiast (with good reason), honorary knight. One thing he does not identify as? Female. Regardless, Glamour has honored the rock star/Poverty Is Sexist campaign founder in their Women of the Year 2016 issue, and people are confused about it. "Pissed off" would be more accurate, actually.

In the list's intro, Glamour makes it clear that they're well aware Bono is cisgender male, and congratulate themselves on being bold enough to honor a man for the first time on a list that also rightfully includes Olympic medalist Simone Biles ("The Record Breaker"), French politician Christine Lagarde ("Lifetime Achievement"), Zendaya and the founders of Black Lives Matter ("The Justice Seekers.").

"For years our Women of the Year Advisory Board—made up of past winners, plus our editors—has put the kibosh on naming a Man of the Year on the grounds that men aren't exactly hurting for awards in this world, and that here at Glamour, the tribe we're into celebrating is female," the magazine states. "But these days most women want men—no, need men—in our tribe."

CNN's Christiane Amanpour quoted Bono as saying "I'm sure I don't deserve" the honor, adding that his own wife said the same. "But I’m grateful for this award as a chance to say the battle for gender equality can’t be won unless men lead it along with women. We’re largely responsible for the problem, so we have to be involved in the solutions.”

The idea that men are valuable allies in the continuing fight for gender equality is certainly a valid one; they cite Obama's excellent essay on his feminist evolution (also published in Glamourand the "super cool" actors rallying around the Emma Watson-assisted #HeForShe campaign. But given that these commendable forays are essentially baby steps in the grand scheme of feminist history, does a man already deserve an AWARD for making the effort?

Much of the internet says "nope." Check out some of the best reactions to Bono's position among Glamour's Women of the Year below.
