Doctor Who will keep silent for the better part of 2016, airing nothing but a Christmas Special, but undergo major transition in 2017 with the addition of a new companion and Steven Moffat’s retirement. Even more, Peter Capaldi has been asked to stay on amid all the chaos, but still isn’t sure of a Doctor Who future without Steven Moffat.

It stands to reason that The BBC wouldn’t look to end Capaldi’s tenure as the 12th Doctor prematurely, though Capaldi wouldn’t be the first Doctor Who star to join their showrunner’s exit, as did David Tennant with Russell Davies. In any case, Capaldi spoke to RadioTimes to confirm he’s been offered an extension to stay on through Moffat’s replacement Chris Chibnall, though without giving definitive consideration just yet:

I’ve been asked to stay on, but it’s such a long time before I have to make that decision. Steven’s been absolutely wonderful, so I love working with him. Chris is fantastic, and I think he’s a hugely talented guy. I don’t know where the show’s gonna go then. I don’t know. I have to make up my mind, and I haven’t yet. As Steven will tell you, it’s very difficult to say goodbye.

We’ll find out more as Chibnall becomes the  new head writer and executive producer after Season 10 in spring 2017, but might Doctor Who be best served with a fresh start, new leading man and all?
