Sometime last year my wife and I were invited by a friend to come see what it's like cooking whole meals in dutch ovens. Frankly at the time I'm not sure if I knew what the heck a dutch oven was. But, it was her friend, she wanted to go, and it involved food so naturally I was in!

Well the food was delicious of course and we found out very quickly that you can cook just about anything in a dutch oven,  including deserts.

The Dutch Oven Group was formed by Jerry Dukes with the sole purpose of keeping the art of dutch oven cooking alive. "We are one of many groups in the country," says Teresa Fleming, a long-time member. "The Black Pot Rovers, that's our official name, came into being by a lot of good friends who wanted to get together to learn different methods of cooking and share recipes."

The Dutch Oven Group meets on the last Saturday of each month at the Boy Scout House in front of Sacred Heart Catholic Church just off Texas Boulevard. Teresa continues, "We used to do demos, hence the official name, at different events. The group has been to Cuthand,  outside of Clarksville, Texas and Mount Pleasant, Texas to teach others the fine art of dutch oven cooking." She also said they have done two demos for the "Women in The Outdoors".

Dutch Oven cooking is considered more of an art form than a necessity these days. Sure, it's easier to cook most things on your stove top or in your oven, but this is more than just cooking a meal, it's keeping alive a tradition, learning a new skill for many of us, and it's fellowship with like-minded people.

I can boil this one down for you pretty easily: we cook great food and have a great time doing it. What's not to like?
