One of the underrated aspects of Marvel’s cinematic universe is its overabundance of good characters. Take Hayley Atwell’s Agent Carter, for example. Most other major movie franchises would jump at the opportunity to have a character as beloved as Peggy Carter; for Marvel, fairly or unfairly, she’s a character they can afford to leave behind. That is, until it was announced that Captain Marvel would take place sometime in the 1990s, opening the door for Atwell’s Carter to appear once more in the MCU. Would she be interested in coming back to play the character? You’d better believe it.

In a new interview with IGN (via Heroic Hollywood), Atwell shares her thoughts on introducing Peggy Carter to more Marvel movies and the lasting impact her character has had on popular culture. It’s a long-ranging interview and clearly a subject that Atwell is passionate about, but for the sake of brevity, let’s jump directly to her comments about the MCU:

I’d love to see [Peggy] more in films. I’d love to see her in her own film. And if we can keep evolving it so that she does new things so that I can surprise myself and she can keep surprising me then I’d love to do it.

If we’re being honest with each other, it’s tough to imagine more opportunities for Atwell’s character going forward. Marvel will be losing stars like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. at the conclusion of the Avengers: Infinity War arc, which no doubt means the studio will want to spend more time establishing the new characters and their backstories rather than circling back on non-contemporary characters from Version 1.0 of the MCU. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see Atwell rejoin the Marvel universe as a regular character - even if it means just plucking her out of time and dropping her into the modern MCU - but my gut tells me that Marvel has different plans in mind for its future.
