The trend in trailers right now is to make things shorter. Teasers for trailers. Vines for teasers for trailers. Even full-length trailers on YouTube now often start with a five-second tease of the trailer you are about to watch five seconds later. It’s hard to conceive of ways content can be chopped any smaller, but studios keep finding ways.

So while I don’t necessarily want a trailer to give away the entire movie either, I’m at least not opposed to the idea of “extended trailers.” Longer is better than shorter. Your typical coming attraction runs two minutes and 30 seconds; this extended one for Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence clocks in around four minutes and forty-five seconds. It doesn’t show you too many more money shots of the aliens tearing down beloved planetary landmarks, but it does give a bit more context around the money shots that previous shorter trailers already revealed. Plus you get even more Jeff Goldblum wisecracks. The ability of that man to make jokes while literally the entire Earth is ripped to shreds is incredible. Millions of people are dying! Hah-HAH!

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

We always knew they were coming back. After INDEPENDENCE DAY redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

“Back from the brink!” I just love the idea that there could be a happy ending for humanity after a space ship the size of the Atlantic Ocean lands in the Atlantic Ocean. What possible outcome could there be besides our total annihilation? Our semi-total annihilation? I guess we’ll find out on June 24, when Independence Day: Resurgence opens in theaters.
