Dirty Truck

I don't know if you've had any experiences with this ramp yet but let me give you fair warning, the eastbound entrance ramp to I-30 just before Summerhill can be very treacherous in the rain! Wednesday morning, (Leap Day) I was entering the freeway on that very ramp in a rather heavy downpour, quite suddenly the rear end of my truck was trying to pass the front end. I tried to steer into the skid but it was too late, all I could do was hang on and hope for the best.

Luckily God was watching out for me that day and neither me nor my pickup were damaged, we were however stuck in a very muddy ditch on the side of I-30. So there I was, stuck-like-Chuck-in-a-truck facing westbound just off the eastbound side of a major highway listing about 30 degrees to starboard, headlights on, wipers going thinking... how come nobody is stopping to ask if I need any help? I'm a proud Texan and grew up with a dad that would stop and render aid to anyone, any time. The way I was raised, that's just what we do, help folks that need it, or at the very least stop and see if they need any help.

I got a big heap-o-nuttin that morning, and frankly it concerns me a little. I sat there for about 30 minutes or so before the tow truck showed up and in all that time, not one soul stopped just to make sure I was alright. What if I had suffered a heart attack or some other medical emergency that could have rendered me unconscious? If it were up to my fellow man that morning, my family would have been sending out funeral notification at this point. Kinda scary huh?

I know I'm not the last person in the Great State of Texas who is willing to stop and help someone... am I? Maybe it was just bad luck, maybe folks driving by could see that I was upright and ok, maybe they were all late to work and just didn't have time to stop, or didn't want to stop in the rain. Maybe they thought I was a drunk or texting and just deserved to be in a ditch. I was not drunk, texting or on the phone at all by the way.  I'm not sure what the answer is, but I hope it was just an isolated incident. I hope there are still plenty of people in the Lone Star State and in Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma that are still willing to stop and render aid when it appears a need is there.

I believe that God would have sent a rescuer if I was in serious need, or at least I hope he would. I wonder how many people drove by, thought about stopping and didn't. Even more thought provoking, I wonder how many drove by, and it never crossed their mind.

Repeating warning, the entrance ramp from the I-30 eastbound service road between Richmond and Summerhill is not much more than a concrete waterfall when it's raining, be careful there please.
