But in case you really need a midday office getaway, the folks at BusinessWeek have some tips!

According to the Center for American Progress, 86 percent of men and 67 percent of women work more than 40 hours a week. The International Labour Organization claims Americans spend 260 more hours a year at the office than the British, and a whopping 499 more hours than the French.

Workers who attempt to slide out of work early could:

  • Use misdirection to focus your co-workers or boss's attention on something else.
  • Set up Skype on your desk computer so you can watch the area around your desk. If a manager comes looking for you, call them to lure them away. Have a buddy chime in on the Skype conversation pretending to be a client.
  • Make a mess on your desk with a note "gone to find janitor".
  • Leave your computer on and streaming Mix 93-3. Your co-workers will thank you for that.  (ok, we made this one up!)
