Patrick Stewart, best known for his role as Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, gave an inspiring response when a fan asked him about his past with domestic violence.

Stewart grew up in Mirfield, England and his father suffered from shell shock, which is now known as post traumatic stress disorder, from serving in the military. Stewart grew up surrounded by domestic violence against his mother.

When asked what he was most proud of besides his acting career he responded with a meaningful response that left me in goosebumps, his work in campaigning against domestic violence on women. "I do what I do in my mother's name because I couldn't help her then, now I can," Stewart answered.

Stewart recalled times growing up when doctors and others told his mother that she must have been doing something wrong. That she must have been doing something to provoke that kind of behavior. Stewart responded with "Wrong. Wrong. My mother did nothing to provoke that and even if she had violence is never ever a choice that a man should make. Ever."

Stewart continues to say how the people who can do most to improve the situation of so many women and children, are men. That the power to improve domestic violence is in the hands of men.
