A Texarkana Texas Police Officer is recovering after being injured during a traffic stop just after midnight last night.

Authorities say around 12:30AM, officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1500 Block of W 7th Street for a motor violation. Upon making contact with the driver officers could smell a strong odor of what they believed to be marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle.

Officers asked the driver, identified as Jaroy Simpson, to exit the vehicle due to the smell of possible marijuana. Simpson initially complied with officers and exited his vehicle. While speaking with Simpson officers noticed what appeared to be marijuana on the center console of the car. As officers were attempting to place Simpson into handcuffs, the suspect got back into the vehicle and placed the vehicle into drive while officers were struggling with him. Officers attempted to exit the vehicle, however one officer was caught inside the vehicle as it began to drive away. The officer was drug a short distance before being able to free himself form the vehicle. The officers on the traffic stop lost sight of the suspect vehicle.

Responding officers located the suspect vehicle at a residence on the 1700 block of W 5th St. Officers gained consent to search the residence and located Simpson hiding in a shed behind the home. Simpson was taken into custody without further incident. During a search of the vehicle officers located several bags of suspected marijuana, ecstasy pills, and an alleged stolen 9mm pistol, and an AK-47 rifle.

Simpson was booked into the Bi-state Jail for evading arrest in a vehicle, aggravated assault on a public servant, possession of a controlled substance over 2 grams, possession of marijuana under 2 ounces, and theft of a firearm. Simpson if being held on a 210,000 dollar bond.

The officer suffered cuts and scratches to his hands and legs from being drug by the suspects vehicle. He was treated for the injuries at the scene.
