Back to school shopping is made cheaper when you can avoid having to pay taxes in the items you need to fill the kid's backpacks. This year’s Texas side sales tax holiday is Friday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 13.

Not everything is tax free so don't plan on going wild down the wrong isles. The items that are tax free include most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks. All of these items must be priced less than $100 each to be tax free. Items sold online and layaways can also be tax free this weekend. According to the Texas Comptroller online:

A sale of a qualifying item under a layaway plan qualifies for exemption if the customer places the qualifying merchandise on layaway during the holiday or makes the final payment during the holiday.

Which means you can shop during the week, place the items on layaway and pay them off during the event weekend. Many items are on sale and during this special shopping weekend you can tack on an extra savings of about $8 on every $100 you spend.
