For those of you unfamiliar with the rogues’ gallery of Aquaman, a brief primer: Black Manta is not an actual giant evil manta ray, but just some guy who hates Aquaman. The Ocean Master is Aquaman’s half-brother, a nefarious wizard and looter who, you guessed it, hates Aquaman. Nereus is a rival undersea king who, naturally, hates Aquaman. They’ll all show their watery faces in the upcoming feature film vehicle for the lord of the briny deep, but today, we can add one more name to the laundry list. (Probably.)

Comic Book Movie ran an item today suggesting that the ‘deep-sea devils’ referred to as the Trench may very well make an appearance when Aquaman hits theaters on December 21, 2018. CBM noted that on the Superhero News podcast, the host makes mention of some monsters that certainly fit the description of The Trench. They look like a race of mutated anglerfish, baring their razor-sharp teeth and luminous eyes as they rush into battle against the denizens of the upper world. They reside in the depths of the Mariana Trench, rising from the black only to ravenously feed on organic matter in Aquaman’s realm. In case you had not yet guessed, they hate Aquaman.

If the Trench aren’t mentioned in the film by name, fans of the comics will recognize the nod anyhow. But will this be a full-fledged villain, or a fleeting Easter egg? Check back in a year and a half to find out!
