We’re just a couple of weeks away from the release of Doctor Strange, which adds a new, mystical layer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with all sorts of wild concepts like transcending astral planes and traveling between dimensions. It’s a lot to take in, especially for the titular character, an arrogant surgeon who — as you can see in these new clips — has a tendency to be quite stubborn.

We had a chance to see expanded versions of these scenes at Marvel’s recent IMAX sneak peek presentation, and both do a fairly decent job of introducing us to Benedict Cumberbatch’s eponymous hero — though he’s nowhere near worthy of that title in these clips. In the first, Strange has made a pilgrimage to the Kamar-Taj to seek the help of Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, who has absolutely no patience for the doctor’s cynical chit chat. She wastes no time at all smacking his astral self right out of his physical being, effectively blowing his mind.

The second clip, below, gets us better acquainted with Christine Palmer, played by Rachel McAdams. Although heavily rumored for some time, Marvel recently denied that McAdams is actually playing Night Nurse — either way, you can check out her chemistry with Strange in this scene, which references their romantic history:

Doctor Strange hits theaters on November 4.
