Investigators Suspect Bear Attack in Death of Man at Campground in Arkansas
This is some sad news for Arkansas as another possible bear attack has taken place. Authorities in Newton County are investigating a tragic incident at Sam’s Throne Campground near the town of Mt. Judea, after a man from Missouri was found dead on Thursday, October 2.

Welfare Check Leads to Tragic Discovery
Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler stated in a press release that his office received a call from a concerned son who hadn’t heard from his father, who had been camping at Sam’s Throne. When a deputy went to check on the man, he found the man's truck and campsite, but the campsite looked disturbed. There was evidence of some kind of a struggle and drag marks leading into the woods.

Investigators sadly soon found the man’s body a short distance from camp, with injuries consistent with an animal attack. Family members told authorities the man had recently sent photos of a bear near his site earlier in the week.
Investigation and Safety Measures
Multiple agencies responded, including the U.S. Forest Service, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and Jasper Police Department. Sheriff Wheeler said while they are waiting for autopsy results from the Arkansas Crime Lab, all signs point to a bear attack.
Officials have temporarily closed Sam’s Throne Campground as a search continues to locate the bear, which is believed to be a young male.
Sheriff Wheeler has alerted people camping in the area to stay vigilant and cautious of the bear, follow all bear safety measures, and report any sightings. He also reminds people not to harm bears unnecessarily, as most will avoid humans.
