With the ongoing planetary alignment, there have been plenty of reasons to look to the night sky in January, now the International Space Station(ISS) is about to fly directly over Texarkana on Friday, January 31 and you won't want to miss it.

Looking Up For The International Space Station

According to NASA, the spectacular International Space Station will be visible at 6:43 PM and remain visible for approximately 6 minutes before it soars out of sight. Typically, the ISS is visible between 1- 4 minutes so anytime you can see it for 6 minutes is a special treat for would-be stargazers like me.

What Time Can I See It?

In Texarkana at 6:43 PM look up 80 degrees above the horizon, then look toward the northwest 10 degrees above NW for its appearance before it disappears 12 degrees above the southeast.

Most sightings of the International Space Station occur a few hours before or after sunset because this is the optimum time when the sun reflects off the space station against the darkening sky.

The only factor that could mess up this viewing is cloud cover, but according to the latest weather reports Friday evening calls for mostly clear skies. Southern Arkansas and Central Arkansas should get a near-perfect viewing if the weather conditions hold up as expected.

I highly recommend anyone who has never seen an ISS flyover, it is something incredible to see. You can download the International Space Station app and track where it will be the next time or go to their website here.

When Will The ISS Fall To Earth?

Enjoy the view while you still can because sadly the ISS is expected to be de-orbited and fall into the Pacific Ocean at the end of 2030. That's only 5 more years! Space X will help pull it out of orbit for its final descent to Earth as it will burn up and the debris will fall into the ocean.

LOOK: 31 breathtaking images from NASA's public library

In 2017, NASA opened the digital doors to its image and video library website, allowing the public to access more than 140,000 images, videos, and audio files. The collection provides unprecedented views of space. Stacker reviewed the collection to select 31 of the most breathtaking images, including the first from the James Webb Space Telescope. Keep reading to see these stunning images, curated with further information about the captured scenes.
