❄Be Prepared for Hazardous Driving Conditions
The cold arctic air is expected to remain in place for most of the workweek with temperatures well below freezing overnight so any snow we receive will most likely make roadways treacherous to drive.
Driving under these conditions is not advised but if you have to Car and Driver, has some great tips on how to drive under extreme weather conditions that could save your life or the lives of others while on the road.
Life-Saving Tips on How to Drive in Snow or Ice
- Slow down and allow plenty of distance to stop. Typically, it's advised you keep at least a three-car distance.
- If you have to stop pump the brakes lightly to avoid sliding or skidding out of control and ease up on the brakes if your wheels lock up.
- Put your vehicle in lower gears if you don't have a 4-wheel drive for better traction on hills or inclines and don't use cruise control.
- Make sure your windshield and headlights stay clear from icing over. Just because you have a 4-wheel drive doesn't necessarily mean you can drive normally.
- Be extra careful on overpasses and bridges as they tend to ice over more rapidly. The City of Texarkana, Texas Public Works Department is pretty good about treating the bridges when they become icy.

Roads and Bridges to be Treated in Texarkana
Beginning on Tuesday, January 7, the city will start pre-treating streets ahead of the expected winter weather later this week. Crews will focus first on areas most vulnerable to freezing, such as bridges, overpasses, low-lying or hilly sections, and critical emergency routes. Once these high-priority areas are covered, the team will extend pre-treatment to other major commercial and residential streets to help improve safety on the roads.
Although this procedure can help prevent ice buildup, it does not eliminate the possibility of icy patches or ensure that all roadways remain clear. Motorists are urged to use caution while traveling during hazardous weather conditions.
If you must be on the highway for work, make sure you are wearing layers of thick clothing, coats, or blankets in case you get stranded.
The smallest things you do could be the difference between life and death. Be careful, don't assume just because you are driving with caution, everyone else is doing the same.
