What’s Going On With Texas Weather in 2025?

What is with the wild weather we’re having in Texas this year? I can’t recall a time when it was as stormy as it has been over the last few months.

Those of us who have lived here our whole lives are used to active storm seasons. However, this year has been the most active I can remember. And while severe weather can strike any time of year, usually late July is just hot and dry with a very low chance of thunderstorms. That’s obviously not the case in 2025.

While (knock on wood) we haven’t had as many tornadoes as usual, flooding has been a major issue this year, especially with the catastrophic July 4th flooding in the Hill Country. We’ve also been pummeled by large hail.

Of course, you can also count plenty of lightning here in Texas. The Lone Star State experienced more lightning than any other state in 2024, with 40.4 million lightning events, according to Fox Weather.

I’ve been told my entire life that a vehicle is one of the safest places you can be during a lightning storm, due to the rubber on the tires acting as a ground that insulates the passengers. That said, being inside a vehicle when it gets struck by lightning has to be terrifying. I know I would’ve needed a new pair of underwear if I had been in the vehicle in the video below.
