One of the most iconic artists of all time lived in the Amarillo area. She also lived in Canyon, Texas, and taught at West Texas Normal College, which we know today as WTAMU.

Iconic Artist Georgia O'Keeffe Lived in Amarillo and Canyon

Georgia O'Keeffe was a teacher in Amarillo arriving in the Yellow City in 1912, and later at West Texas State Normal College from 1916-1918. This time in Texas had a large influence on her art. With that said, Georgia O'Keeffe had a huge influence on the art community in the Texas Panhandle.

"The Brightness of Light" a Documentary About Georgia O'Keeffe

Paul Wagner made a documentary about Georgia O'Keeffe called "The Brightness of Light." The documentary explores the life of O'Keeffe as an art pioneer in America following her early years, her time in New York, and in New Mexico.

The Amarillo Film Society Presents An Evening With Georgia O'Keeffe

On Saturday, April 12th the Amarillo Film Society will host a screening of Paul Wagner's "The Brightness of Light," honoring Georgia O'Keeffe. The evening will also include a Q&A session with WTAMU Art History Professor Amy Von Lintel.

The event will take place at the Sad Monkey Hall at the Sad Monkey Mercantile.

Doors open at 6 pm with the documentary showing at 7 pm. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event. The cost is $25 and tickets may be purchased here.

Fun fact, according to "Georgia O'Keeffe In Canyon" By Fred Stoker, O'Keeffe once walked 12 miles from Canyon to Palo Duro Canyon because she didn't have a car. It is only fitting to host this event near that milestone.

The event is a fundraiser for the Amarillo Film Society.

It's a perfect date night, a chance to hang out with art-minded people who love movies and art, and a chance to learn about the iconic Georgia O'Keeffe.

When WT was first established in 1909 it was known as West Texas State Normal College. It has since been West Texas State Teachers College, West Texas State College, West Texas State University, and as we know it today West Texas A&M University.
