Welp, you know the saying, “Everything is bigger in Texas,” well apparently when it comes to car thefts that saying is also very very true! And Im sure that’s something we wish wasn’t.

When the temperatures get colder, many of us are used to leaving our cars running so they can warm up before we get inside, however, with these new stats you may want to reconsider doing that. Leaving cars runnning is one of the many ways thefts can easily steal a vehicle.

There’s a new report by moneygeek that is showing that Texas has the 10th highest car theft rate in the U.S., with 320 thefts per 100,000 residents in 2021. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), full-size pickups and reliable sedans are the top targets for car thieves.

Here’s Why Car Thefts in Texas Are So High:

According to the report:

“Car theft rates in Texas saw an upward trend from 2018 to 2021. The rise in car theft rates poses challenges for car ownership and car insurance rates in Texas. Heightened theft rates may necessitate enhanced security measures and potentially impact insurance premiums in the state."

  1. Full-Size Pickups

Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC trucks dominate the list. These workhorses are not only functional but also prime targets for thieves. The Chevrolet Silverado alone clocked nearly 10,000 thefts in 2021.

  1. Dependable Sedans

The Honda Accord, Civic, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima also made the cut. These popular models are loved for their reliability—and apparently, so are their model year models from the mid-2000s.

  1. Trends to Watch

While Texas has seen a slight uptick in car theft rates, the most stolen vehicles often align with their nationwide popularity, making them easy to resell or strip for parts.
