Memorial Day is about more than just cookouts, picnics, water fun, and a day off from school or work. It is about honoring our service men and women who have died while serving our country, and to remember those who served proudly and have since passed on.With that in mind, we would like to thank the Texarkana Rotary Clubs for putting out more than 3,200 American flags that will be on display in Texarkana on Memorial Day Monday.

Also, there will be several observances you can attend. On Monday, the day gets started with a Veterans Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at the Miller County Courthouse on the Arkansas side of town.

Immediately following that service there will be a Memorial Day walk to the Korean-Vietnam Memorial at 7th and State Line Avenue.

The day will conclude with a Veterans Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at the Hillcrest Memorial Park on Highway 67 West in Wake Village. Travel through an avenue of flags featuring more than 285 large United States flags and observe an abundance of more than 1,200 United States flags marking the graves of veterans who are buried in the park.

At the Hillcrest service, former Miss Southwest Arkansas and recording artist Klancy Johnson will sing the National Anthem. There will be the POW-MIA "Empty Chair" ceremony conducted by Billy Walker who is an ex-POW.

Art Candelaria, a retired Miller Bowie Veteran Service Officer, will read the roll call of local veterans organizations and he will conduct the placing of the wreath.

The special guest speaker for the event will be James Henry Russell, who is the President of Texarkana College. After the benediction by Dr. Jerry Creek, the Texarkana, Texas Police Department Honor Guard will conduct the 21-Gun Salute and the playing of "Taps."

The Hillcrest event will be under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home. The public is invited and encouraged to attend these free Memorial observances.
