The Texarkana, Texas Police Department is investigating an accidental shooting of a 12 year old boy by his 9 year old brother at their residence.

Officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting in the 300 block of Breckenridge Street at 10:09PM last night. Upon arrival, officers found a 12 year old boy with a single gunshot wound to his cheek. Police said they were told that the boy’s younger brother found a .380 handgun belonging to his parents in the home and was playing with it.

According to police, the pistol accidentally discharged and struck the older boy in the cheek. The boy indicated to police that he did not realize that the gun was loaded. The children’s mother was home at the time but was reportedly not in the room when the shooting occurred.

The victim was transported to Christus St. Michael by ambulance and later airlifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock as a precautionary measure. The child is listed in stable condition, and his injuries are not considered to be life threatening at this time.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
