New ‘Fantastic Beasts 2′ Details Revealed as Sequel Shooting Gets Underway
Shooting is underway for Fantastic Beasts 2, and that means we've conjured up a whole suitcase full of fantastic plot details without you worrying where to find them.
Picking up just months after the conclusion of Warner Brothers' prequel to the Harry Potter franchise, principal photography for Fantastic Beasts 2 has officially begun this week. Even though a series of films under the Fantastic Beasts banner were announced, the $800 million box office success of the first entry all but sealed the deal for more stories in the Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) story.
This time around, the recently captured Gellert Grindlewald (Johnny Depp) has escaped imprisonment, and is currently gathering more wizards to his devious cause. According to Entertainment Weekly, the only people who can stop him this time are his former friend, a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), and the walking bestiary himself, Newt. Rather than taking place in New York in the 1920s, the film will take place primarily in Paris, though it would appear some of Newt's American friends will once again be along for the ride.
American wizards Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol), and oblivated no-maj Jacob (Dan Fogler) are all returning, as is Credence (Ezra Miller), whose mysterious fate at the end of the first Fantastic Beasts will clearly lead to him returning to help Newt. Maybe. I doubt that poor kid is going to be working with Grindlewald again. The synopsis hints that all of these relationships will be tested as the wizarding world faces one of its greatest threats, though we're willing to be Newt and his best buds will all make it through these dark times together.
New to the cast will be Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, who appeared only in photographic form in the first film, and Callum Turner, who will step into the war hero shoes of Newt's brother, Theseus Scamander. Claudia Kim and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will appear as members of a magical circus, and Kevin Guthrie will play Abernathy, a man associated with the Magical Congress of the USA.
Fantastic Beasts 2 is expected to hit theaters in November 2018, and will again be directed by David Yates and written by JK Rowling. Three more films beyond Fantastic Beasts 2 are planned, and if they keep pulling in nine-figure incomes, it's unlikely Warner Bros. will ever stop playing around in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
