The Flash put an admittedly clever spin on its usual big bads by the reveal of Savitar’s true identity, but Season 4 clearly called for a change. So it is, that our first non-speedster villain is now confirmed to follow the clues dropped in Season 3, giving Team Flash something to really think about.

Believe it or not, those dual Season 3 references to “DeVoe” as one of Barry Allen’s future foes were actually intentional. DC Comics fans recognized Abra-Kadabra and Savitar’s name-drops as a nod toward Clifford “The Thinker” DeVoe, and TVLine now confirms The Flash Season 4 is indeed casting its brainy big bad.

Much as Supergirl found its own Season 3 big bad, The Flash is apparently casting a “40something actor to play what one might call ‘the fastest mind alive.’” In the comics, Clifford DeVoe is just one of several villains to use the “Thinker” name, but is typically depicted as a failed lawyer with tech-enhanced mental acuity, telekinesis and mind-control. TVLine also speculates that DeVoe’s abilities might be adapted to fit The Flash’s particle accelerator origin, though The CW would not confirm any details.

Elsewhere, relatively little is known of The Flash Season 4, other than its immediate issue of returning Barry Allen from a Speed Force time-out. No major turnover is expected among the current cast, but it remains unknown if Harry Potter alum Tom Felton will return in his role as Julian Albert.

We’ll likely hear additional details of The Flash Season 4 soon, so stay tuned.
