Good News: Arkansas Traffic Deaths Down Nearly 50 Compared to Last Year

There’s a little good news on Arkansas highways this year.

The number of people killed in traffic crashes across Arkansas is down significantly compared to this time last year, according to new preliminary figures released by the Arkansas State Police.

Better Is Better, Right?

As of July 29, 245 people have died on Arkansas roadways in 2026. That's 47 fewer deaths than at the same point in 2025, when 292 traffic fatalities had been recorded.

Arkansas State Police Director Col. Mike Hagar said each life saved represents a family that didn't have to receive the devastating news that a loved one had been killed in a crash.

"That represents 47 fewer families whose lives have been permanently changed and 47 fewer death notifications our Troopers have had to make," Hagar said.

While the numbers can still change during the remainder of the year, the early trend is encouraging. Arkansas recorded 569 traffic deaths in 2025, following 563 in 2024, 566 in 2023, 605 in 2022 and 648 in 2021.

What's Causing The Arkansas Fatality Drop?

Hagar said the decline is the result of proactive enforcement and increased visibility by Arkansas State Police Troopers, even as traffic volumes and the state's population continue to grow.

Arkansas State Police and the Highway Safety Office continue promoting safe driving through campaigns such as Click It or Ticket, Drive High, Get a DWI, Put the Phone Away or Pay, and Drive Aware, Walk Aware, Bike Aware, Save Lives. Troopers also continue year-round speed enforcement and increased DWI patrols around holidays.

The agency recently introduced its new "Rules of the Road" video series, designed to help drivers better understand Arkansas traffic laws and safe driving practices.
