ASP Dashcam Video Of Officer-Involved Shooting in Rogers Released
It's hard to be a cop, a statement that really should go without saying, but a reminder from time to time doesn't hurt. Dashcam footage was just released by the Arkansas State Police (ASP) showing a traffic stop on July 27, 2024, that resulted in an officer-involved shooting. During the incident on Interstate 49, a man identified as Angel Zapet-Alvarado, 26, of Guatemala, allegedly resisted arrest after being pulled over for speeding. WARNING: Contains Graphic Video Link
The footage shows Trooper Alexandria Duncan initiating the traffic stop after Zapet-Alvarado allegedly drove 114 miles per hour in heavy traffic near mile marker 83. Despite initially failing to stop for the patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and sirens, Zapet-Alvarado eventually pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. When instructed to exit the vehicle, he allegedly refused to comply, and Trooper Duncan reportedly had to remove his keys to prevent him from driving away.
According to the report, after Zapet-Alvarado resisted efforts to remove him from the vehicle, Trooper Duncan deployed her taser. Zapet-Alvarado is accused of wrestling the taser away and throwing it into interstate traffic before allegedly kicking Trooper Duncan in the head multiple times.
A bystander, Kylie Sutton, 31, of Rogers, witnessed the incident and attempted to assist Trooper Duncan as seen in the video. During the altercation, Trooper Duncan discharged her service weapon, striking Zapet-Alvarado in the right temple. Despite the injury, Zapet-Alvarado allegedly continued to resist arrest.
Benton County Prosecutor Joshua Robinson reviewed the case and, after an investigation by the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division, concluded that Trooper Duncan’s use of deadly force complied with Arkansas law.
Following the incident, Zapet-Alvarado was taken to Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas for treatment and later released into police custody. Blood tests reportedly indicated his blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit at .16, and cannabinoids were also detected. Zapet-Alvarado remains in custody at the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he is being held for Homeland Security Investigation (HSI).
Trooper Duncan received treatment for injuries sustained during the altercation, which were described as non-life-threatening.
ASP Col. Mike Hagar said;
“I wholeheartedly support Trooper Duncan. We tell our Troopers to trust their instincts and lean into their experience and training when they’re on the highways. Anyone who has walked in a Trooper’s boots knows that trusting your gut keeps you safe so that you can protect and serve the public. In our world, hesitation can get you killed.”
“I thank God that He gave Alex the strength to survive that encounter, and that He put Kylie by her side when she needed support the most. I’m so proud of them both.”
