Arkansas Town One Of The Most Awkwardly Named Cities In The World

I have to admit I am not an Arkansas native, but since I have lived here for over 20 years. I have learned a few things about the Natural State and this fact is a little silly but kinda cool all at the same time.

There are some silly named cities in Arkansas, and even some that sound a little dirty. I wrote about them in this story.  But this town in Arkansas is considered one the most awkwardly names cities in the world.

The site Travelalot.com had a story on the 30 most awkward cities in the world. To give you an idea of these awkward city names here are a few examples.  Coxsackie Ravenia, New York, Knob Lick Kentucky, and even Boody Illinois. But this town in Arkansas that makes their list is Weiner. Yes, Weiner.

Here is what the encyclopedia of Arkansas had to say about the history of Weiner Arkansas:

Weiner, a prairie land surrounded by forest, was originally known as West Prairie, and a post office of that name was set up in 1874. Families and pioneers moved into the West Prairie region between 1870 and 1880 as homesteaders.

I found a video of the annual 'Rice Festival' that is held yearly in the town of Weiner.

Did you know that Weiner was considered the 'Duck Capital of the World' in the 1950s after it featured Wallace Claypools private duck hunting preserve on the tv show 'Wide Wide World' in 1956?
