1. Foreign-Owned Companies – About 1.39 Million Acres
The largest landholders in Louisiana aren't actually individuals, they're foreign-owned companies and investment groups.
According to federal land ownership data, foreign investors own approximately 1.39 million acres of Louisiana land, much of it concentrated in timber-producing areas such as Beauregard, Vernon, and LaSalle Parishes.
2. The U.S. Federal Government – More Than 1.33 Million Acres
More than 1.33 million acres are managed by federal agencies, including national wildlife refuges, military installations, national forests, and other public lands.
Many of these properties help preserve Louisiana's unique ecosystems while also providing hunting, fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
3. The Martin Family – Around 582,000 Acres
If you've lived in Louisiana for any length of time, especially in Central and North Louisiana, you've probably heard of Roy O. Martin.
The Alexandria, Louisiana based lumber company has been a major player in Louisiana's timber industry for more than a century, and the Martin family owns roughly 582,000 acres throughout the state.

Yes, Bill Gates owns land in Louisiana.
The Microsoft co-founder has quietly invested in farmland across the United States, including approximately 70,000 acres in Louisiana.

5. Golden Ranch Farms – Around 52,000 Acres
Located in south Louisiana, Golden Ranch Farms owns approximately 52,000 acres.
Owned by Arlen Cenac Jr., the property serves as Louisiana's largest privately owned wildlife refuge and is recognized for conservation efforts, habitat restoration, and protecting coastal ecosystems.
6. Land Trust Louisiana – About 10,000 Acres

Rounding out the list is Land Trust Louisiana.
The nonprofit owns and manages roughly 10,000 acres dedicated to conserving forests, wetlands, waterways, and wildlife habitats across the state.
Its work focuses on protecting natural resources while improving water quality and preserving Louisiana's unique landscape for future generations.
