Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter Plans Spa Day for Female Residents
The Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter is planning a special day for all of its female residents.
On May 5, 2016 the female residents will be treated to a spa day filled with hair and nail appointments, facials, eye exams, clothes, lunch, professional portraits, and ending with tea service.
Women who are living in the Shelter will be paired with a volunteer for the day and the group will be transported via limousines from Orr Deluxe Limousine service to have their hair and nails done at Texarkana College Cosmetology School, facials at the Beauty and Wellness Center, eye exams and glasses as needed at Vision4Less, have lunch at Twisted Fork, have a portrait taken by Jennifer Futrell Photography and will end their day having tea at the Collins Home operated by Hands on Texarkana. The women will also be choosing an outfit at First United Methodist Church Texarkana, Texas and will receive a bag with makeup to take home.
“The event is the first of its kind for the Shelter and we hope to see it become an annual event," said Jennifer Laurent, Shelter executive director. The event was a brainchild of, and is chaired by, board member Julie Collins. "Julie thought it would be a wonderful way to let our ladies feel special and I wholeheartedly agree," said Laurent.
"We found sponsors for the event and vendors were so kind to offer their services at a reduced fee, helping make this entire project a reality. We are so grateful for the sweet committee members who are making this day happen for our ladies. I just know this day will be one they will remember for years to come.”
The Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter is an emergency shelter for adult men and women. It is the only completely free, 93-bed facility in an 85-mile-radius. In 2015 the Shelter provided more than 30,000 services to members of our community and more than 175 people moved from the Shelter into permanent housing. In the first quarter of 2016, 38 people moved from the Shelter into permanent housing. .
The Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter, Inc., a 501c(3) organization, was developed as a product of a labor of love. Randy Sams was a local teenager who volunteered at the local Outreach Kitchen. In May 1993, Randy was tragically killed. In honor of their son, Randy's parents donated land and seed money to establish a shelter that would serve the Greater Texarkana community, hungry, poor, and homeless. The RSOS opened on January 6, 1996, and now averages between 75 and 80 guests per night. To date, the RSOS has transitioned over 1,100 clients to permanent housing from the RSOS and over 12,000 community clients have received utility assistance, rental assistance and food baskets.
The community can help by providing monetary support, or donations of food, clothing, hygiene and cleaning supplies as well as paper goods and towels, sheets and other household items. Many volunteer opportunities are available.
