Sam Smith took home the Oscar for Best Original Song on Sunday, something no one of saw coming.

It’s safe to say Smith’s “Writings on the Wallfrom Spectre hasn’t been the most well-liked James Bond theme. The British singer beat out The Weeknd (“Earned It” from Fifty Shades of Grey), David Lang (“Simple Song #3” from Youth), J. Ralph and Anohni (“Manta Ray” from Racing Extinction), and, most surprisingly, Lady Gaga and Diane Warren for “Till It Happens To You” from the documentary The Hunting Ground.

But then the British songwriter made his acceptance speech about something bigger than an award. “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man,” Smith said, “and I hope we can all stand together as equals one day.” He then dedicated his award to the LGBT community.

Smith performed the Bond theme alone on stage early into the ceremony. However Gaga’s performance of “Till It Happens To You” stood out as the most moving and powerful moments of the evening. After being introduced by Vice President Joe Biden, who received a standing ovation from the crowd, Gaga performed the song from a white piano as survivors and victims of sexual assault filled the stage. Even if Gaga isn’t an Oscar winner, she gave the 2016 Oscars one of its most emotional moments.
