Tom Cruise Is Only Mostly Dead in the First Trailer for ‘The Mummy’
Every year, when the bottom drops out of the summer movie season and audiences decide to stay home and watch television instead, some well-meaning critic will publish an article asking if cinema is dead. And every year, I pose the same question in response: “Is Tom Cruise still an action star?” As long as Tom Cruise is running across multiplex screens — fighting rogue nations, government conspiracies, and even the occasional mummy — there is still hope for cinema. Then, when Cruise’s career is done and Hollywood is in ashes, then, cinema, you have my permission to die.
And if this trailer for The Mummy is any indication, Cruise not only has no plans of slowing down anytime soon, he also rejects the entire premise of aging and death. This is an absolutely bonkers trailer, with Cruise’s character navigating a crashing plane — a la the Mission: Impossible series — only to come back from the dead to fight an ancient evil force with a piece of wood. The Mummy sees all of our jokes about Cruise’s longevity and turns the dial up to eleven; maybe it won’t be a movie that has the power to terrify as previously promised, but just the first minute of the trailer would be in the running for best action movies of 2016. I can’t wait to see what else it has in store.
Here is the full plot synopsis for The Mummy:
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension. From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
In addition to Tom Cruise, The Mummy will also feature Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance, and open everywhere on June 9, 2017.
