Everywhere you look people will be spending the next several days trashing Christina Aguiera who fumbled the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. It was abysmal, and shame on her for it. But I'm not going to trash her for flubbing the lines. Lots of people do that, if you put me in front of millions of viewers and said recite the pledge I'd probably forget my name as the flop sweat shoots from my pores. Although I can't speak for many, just myself, flubbing the lines is forgivable if she apologizes. What's not forgivable to me is the manner and style in which she performed it.

I'm talking about the vocal warbling she and most pop stars do during the performance of a song that means a lot to me and a lot of Americans who have a patriotic bone in their body. Traditionally, people like to sing along with it and in my opinion should be performed in such a way as that can be done. As for me, a well performed National Anthem will put a lump in my throat every time. Aguiera's performance did not.

By the time she got to the flubbed line my ears were already bleeding so badly I barely noticed. I did notice, but it took a second to register the mistake to be honest. I'm not sure who started the vocal calisthenics thing but it passed the point of being ridiculous a long time ago. The gauge of a great singer should be, can he or she actually hit the notes of the song, not see how fast they can run up and down the musical scales around the note they're supposed to be hitting.

This is the "National Anthem", a point of pride for most Americans I hope, I don't mind a little creative flare by an artist, but it should be performed appropriately each and every time so that those who want to sing along in the stadium, or at home for that matter, can do so.

This is not one of those songs that are open to interpretation by the "artist". If you're going to sing it, sing it right, And for heaven's sake, please try to learn the words.

My opinion, please feel free to give yours below.
