On Sunday, June 19th (yes, Father's Day) I along with two of my shooting buddies, Dean and Brad, motored down to Longview to shoot in the East Texas Pistol and Rifle Club's "Steel Challenge" match. This was Dean and I's first time for this type of match, Brad's second or third I believe, and I must say hats off to the good folks in Longview, we had a great time even though it was unmercifully hot, at least we had a breeze that day so it remained tolerable. Check them out at www.ETPRC.com.

The Steel Challenge is very different from our usual USPSA/IPSC match because speed is the main thing here. Sure you have to hit the target for it to count, but it doesn't matter where you hit it, just hit it and move on to the next target as fast you can. There is also little to no movement, for the most part you stand in one box and shoot the targets. You shoot five strings, for newbies that would be, you take five turns, on each target array. They throw out your worst time and total up the rest to come up with your score (in seconds) for that stage. There were five stages and my total was 140.04 seconds to shoot 25 targets, 4 times each. I should have done better but my gun was giving me fits again, more failure to feed issues. Not sure what the answer is on that yet, it may be that the feed ramp is getting dirty too quick and thus causing the feed issue to crop up. It could be a combination of the ammo I'm using and the dirty feed ramp, I don't know, I'll just have to keep working through it till I figure it out. But that feed problem really hurt me on the stage that should have been my fastest, "Smoke and Hope".  I'll have to look at the video again but I had at least 3, maybe 4 feed problems on that one stage. Darn the luck!

No matter, it's not like any money was riding on it, but to those like me that have a competitive bone in their body, it's a tough when your equipment takes a dump on you thereby not allowing you to achieve your best possible score. Me and the Drimmel tool may have to go to work on this feed ramp one of these days. Just saying.

In case you're curious, I shot better than Brad but Dean whooped me like a government mule! He came in 3rd, I came in 7th out of 12 centerfire shooters.

Speaking of too hot! This Saturday, July 2nd is our monthly Texarkana Gun Club USPSA match. We'll get started at 10am, shooters need to be there at least a half hour early to register. Bring plenty of water, wear sunscreen and a hat. We have shade at each stage, that's where you'll find me when I'm not shooting or running the timer. Stop by our website for more details at TexarkanaGunClub.org.

I was going to do a practice session this past weekend but other things came up and got in the way, besides... it's too danged hot for practice!
