Star Trek Tricorder

The BBC is reporting a new X-Prize being offered up by Qualcomm for the first person or company that can invent a real Tricorder medical scanning device similar to what was carried by medical personnel on the fictional TV show Star Trek. There are some very specific things that it has to be able to do to qualify for the prize. For more information click here.

What are some of the other Star Trek tech that was completely fictional back when the TV show was made that's real today?

  1. Hand-held flip-open communicators or as we call them today, cell phones.
  2. Lieutenant Uhura's communications ear piece looks a lot like a Blue Tooth headset.
  3. Data pads that Captain Kirk was always signing held by some lovely young Ensign look very much like todays iPads and other Tablet PCs.
  4. Vision enhancing goggles (night vision and thermal vision) look and work similar to Jordy's VISOR.
  5. Doors that open automatically when you approach them, yep, them too.

That's all I can think of at the moment, maybe you can come up some more.
