John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

He first became fascinated with guitars after watching Michael J. Fox's performance as Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future'. His father rented a guitar for him when he was 13. When Mayer's passion turned to what his parents saw as an obsession, they took him to see a psychiatrist.

Mayer practiced for two years then started playing at bars while he was still in high school. He did solo acts and joined a band for a while. An illness at age 17 caused him to look within and that is when he started writing songs.

His first big hit came in 2003: 'Your Body is a Wonderland'.
