If Colossal isn’t on your radar, it should be. The new film from Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows) is his best yet — and the first full trailer hardly does it justice. Featuring an absolutely phenomenal performance from Anne Hathaway, Colossal offers a hilarious, thoughtful and strangely poignant twist on the classic kaiju movie, and is easily one of the most surprising films of 2017.

This trailer barely scratches the surface of Colossal’s story, but that might be for the best. In the film, Hathaway plays a woman with a drinking problem who moves back to her hometown after her boyfriend (Dan Stevens, continuing to have a great year) dumps her. There, she reconnects with an old friend from her youth (Jason Sudeikis) and tries to get her crap together, but when she discovers that she has a weird mental connection to a monster wreaking havoc in Seoul, things get a bit more complicated — to say the least.

If the trailer for Colossal doesn’t sell you, then just know that Vigalondo’s new film is a delightful, emotionally complex story with a kind of amazing thematic hook. It’s ridiculously smart and socially relevant, and will totally make you see Anne Hathaway in a new light.

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) drinks too hard and parties too much. Her boyfriend has enough of it and throws her out. Gloria returns to her hometown, dreaming of making a new start, but instead revives her childhood friendship with Oscar (Jason Sudeikis), who runs a bar. After drinking a night away with Oscar and his friends, he wakes up to discover a gigantic monster rampaging through Seoul and realizes that somehow the monster is connected to her.

Colossal also stars Tim Blake Nelson and Austin Stowell, and hits theaters on April 7.
