It Was Raining Fish in Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas Wednesday
Look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane... nope, it's a Shad I think. It was in fact a fish, a lot of fish fell from the sky Wednesday evening in Texarkana, Texas/Arkansas. Did you get some?
We didn't get any at our house, that we have found anyway, but we saw reports on Facebook of fish falling in the McLarty Ford dealership parking lot and many other places around the Texarkana area yesterday afternoon during that last round of heavy thunderstorms that came through our area.
There had to be some happy feral cats around town yesterday, as they turned to each other and said, "look, it's raining food". The fish in the picture above fell in our radio station parking lot and they look a little beat up, I guess you would too if you had been tossed around in the upper atmosphere for a while.
Pics From Around Town
Lucy Morrison said these fell close to Texas High School. They were in the front and back yard, the street, and the neighbor's yard.
Tonya Elder said this chunky one landed in a car lot on the corner of Summerhill and College Drive.
Amy Austin didn't say where this one was taken but it looks like a yard-fish to me.
Kelley Moore says this one was taken in the Discount Wheel and Tire on Summerhill road parking lot.
The Science
It's an odd phenomenon Wikipedia calls "Rain of Animals".
A rain of animals is a rare meteorological phenomenon in which flightless animals fall from the sky. One hypothesis is that tornadic waterspouts sometimes pick up creatures such as fish or frogs, and carry them for up to several kilometers.
Personal Observation
I think it would be fascinating to see if some really smart person could figure out what body of water these fish came from. How far did they travel?
Does this mean that those stupid Sharknado movies are actually possible?
Just thinking out loud...
What an odd day.
