Staying at the Capital Hotel: Little Rock, Arkansas’ Historic Gem Near the River Market

Have you ever been to the Capital Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas? A few weeks ago, my husband and I were headed to Little Rock for a concert when he surprised me by booking a night at this beautiful historic hotel.

The Capital Hotel opened in 1876 and is located in the heart of downtown Little Rock. It’s just a short walk to the River Market, which is full of great restaurants, and about a mile from Simmons Bank Arena. It’s also right down the street from the Governor’s Mansion, so the location really couldn’t be better.

Even though the location is great, it’s what’s inside the hotel that makes it so special. This is a beautiful hotel! You can’t help but feel a little opulent as you walk through the doors. The lobby is gorgeous, and the elevator is the biggest elevator I’ve ever seen. It’s so big, you could bring a horse in it!

That’s probably why there’s a story that Ulysses S. Grant, while visiting Arkansas, once brought his horse into the elevator and took it up to his room because of unsavory people outside. Well, don’t believe it. It never happened, but it still makes for a great story!

We were able to get a last-minute reservation just a few days before our trip, and with a concert happening that weekend, we were lucky to get a room. Our room was on the third floor, and although it was small, I loved it! It was sweet, comfortable and beautifully decorated, with gorgeous bedding, beautiful robes, a mini bar and a huge big-screen TV. The hotel also has larger rooms and suites, but the weekend we visited was pretty full.

The Capital Hotel has two restaurants, with one serving dinner and offering a full bar, while the other is open for breakfast. One of the newer services offered by the hotel is its Black Car Service. For just $20, you can let the front desk know when you need a ride to a concert, downtown attraction, or the airport. The car will pick you up at the hotel, and when you’re ready to return, simply call, and they’ll come get you. You certainly can’t get an Uber for that price, and the car itself was beautiful! (Oh, and don't forget to tip the driver!)

When you stay at the Capital Hotel, you will not only fall in love it but also with the staff. Everyone we came across, from the valets and front desk staff to the restaurant staff and car service, was helpful, friendly and welcoming.
