Texas Animal Control Officer Saves Hawk Trapped in Fishing Line

A Simple Reminder That Could Save Wildlife

If you know me, then you know I love animals, not just pets, but all animals and wildlife. That's why a recent post from a Texas Animal Shelter really caught my attention.

The New Boston Texas Animal Shelter shared a video on their Facebook page from one of their Animal Control Officers about a recent rescue that carries an important message for anyone who enjoys fishing.

The officer explained that it's common for fishing lines to get tangled in trees or shrubs near the water. When that happens, many anglers cut the line and continue fishing, often without thinking twice about it.

Unfortunately, that leftover fishing line can become a serious danger to wildlife.

Hawk Rescued From Fishing Line

In this case, a hawk flew into a tree and became entangled in discarded fishing line. Thankfully, a woman noticed the bird struggling and contacted Animal Control. An officer responded and was able to safely rescue the hawk.

According to the officer, the bird was wrapped in nearly 18 feet of fishing line.

After the rescue, the officer recorded a short public service announcement to help raise awareness about the dangers abandoned fishing line can pose to birds and other wildlife. The hawk appeared remarkably calm throughout the rescue, almost as if it knew help had arrived.

A Small Action Can Make a Big Difference

I know it can't always be easy to retrieve fishing line that gets hung up in a tree or brush. But when it can be done safely, taking a few extra minutes to remove it and dispose of it properly could make all the difference for an animal that encounters it later.

It's a simple reminder that small actions can have a big impact, and sometimes even save a life.
