Next week, TxDOT and Red River Federal Credit Union are extending an open invitation to the public for a complimentary car seat inspection event. This initiative is crucial as studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that a staggering 46 percent of child car seats are not installed or being used correctly. Tragically, in 2022 alone, Texas witnessed the loss of 72 young lives under the age of 8 in road accidents, with many of these fatalities occurring due to lack of proper restraint.

The event takes place in the parking lot of Red River Credit Union on Summerhill Road from 1 - 4 PM. There will be on-site certified technicians who will meticulously inspect car seats to ensure their correct installation. Additionally, caregivers will receive valuable education regarding the appropriate safety seats required for children of varying ages and sizes. A limited number of car seats will also be available at no cost, further promoting safety within the community.

Under Texas law, it is mandated that all children under 8 years of age be securely fastened in a car seat while traveling in a vehicle unless they exceed the height requirement of 4 feet, 9 inches.

"There will be no judgement," says Traffic Safety Specialist Emyli Speer at TxDOT's Atlanta District, "Car seat installations can sometimes be tricky to navigate. We're here to assist."

No prior appointment is necessary for participation.
