The long cold winter season is here and I have often wondered where is the coldest town in Arkansas located.

According to the National Service, the coldest town in Arkansas is Gilbert in the Ozark Mountain region because of its unusual weather patterns. Gilbert resides on the banks of the Buffalo National River, residents living there experience an average low of 24 degrees in January. Google pegs it at 23 degrees but I'm not going to argue over 1 degree.

According to the website Animals A-Z, one of the main reasons for the frigid cold temperature is the Ozark Mountains' high elevation which blocks warmer air from moving in from the South allowing the colder air to settle and bring down the temperatures.  January is normally the snowiest in that region as well during this time of the year.

The Ozark Mountain Plateau also has the coolest temperature during the summer months with an average temperature of 79 degrees which has coined the phrase, "Coolest Place in Arkansas."

Weather patterns in Arkansas are very diverse depending on what part of the state you live in. Changes in landscapes and altitudes play a huge part in its climate. Several natural regions affected by this include the Arkansas River Valley, Ozark Plateau, Ouachita Mountains, and the West Gulf Coastal Plains along with the Mississippi Plains.

Arkansas Record Cold

The coldest temperature in the state was 29 degrees below zero, that record remains today and it occurred in a small community of Brook Farm Pond, near Gravette 3 miles West of Bentonville in Northwest Arkansas on February 13, 1905.
