As far back as I can remember, I’ve been a sucker for movies where soldiers fight monsters. Aliens. Predator. Starship Troopers. Dog Soldiers. Heck, even mediocre films like Battle: Los Angeles are the cinematic equivalent of catnip to me. Take a group of hardened soldiers, throw them into a paranormal environment, and sit back and enjoy as the bullets start flying and everything falls apart. It’s like the best of war movies and the best of monster movies, all swirled together in one high-octane bundle of crazy.

So yeah, I’m all in on Netflix’s upcoming science fiction thriller Spectral. As pointed out by the folks over at /Film, Spectral is more a misplaced theatrical release than a direct-to-video production, with Universal Pictures pulling the film from its release calendar back in June of this year. Despite this vote of no-confidence by Universal, there are still reasons to get excited. Spectral was written by the people behind The Bourne Ultimatum and Kong: Skull Island, comes with a brand new score from Mad Max: Fury Road composer Junkie XL, and even has some A-list special effects work courtesy of Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop. Deadline broke the news last month that Netflix had snapped up the rights and would be releasing it just in time for the holidays.

Here is the full plot synopsis for Spectral courtesy of the Deadline piece:

A brilliant DARPA scientist embarks on a deadly mission with a Special Ops team of Delta Force soldiers into a battle-scarred, war-torn city, where mysterious phantom aggressors code-named Spectral have been causing inexplicable civilian deaths.

Spectral stars James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, Bruce Greenwood, and Max Martini and will be made available globally by Netflix on December 9.
