What the Heck is going on in Texas? Squirrels Are ‘Splooting’

Eww, that can't be good. Actually, it's not what you think, the word "Splooting" or "Sploot" is not even found in some dictionaries. According to the Washington Post, dog, and cat owners have used the word for quite some time after they notice their pets doing it. Come to think of when I had my dog I remember seeing him doing it in those long hot summer months. By the way, that is not to be confused with the word, Splooge.

What is Splooting?

According to a report from KHOU11, Splooting is when an animal lays on its stomach and extends out their four legs and paws on a cooler surface in order to cool down their body temperature from the extreme heat.

So, it's possible you might see a squirrel sploot on the ground, around trees, and even on top of a roof which I don't understand because I would think that would be really hot.

A video was posted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife on Monday showing squirrels "splooting" at Inks Lake State Park near Austin. Park officials say it's sort of like flipping a pillow when it becomes too hot. Unlike humans who find alternative ways to cool off squirrels do not have that luxury they have to move from spot to spot in order to find a cooler surface.

So, if our heat dome continues don't be surprised if you see a squirrel "splooting."
