‘You Were Never Really Here’ Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Whacks a Bunch of Kidnappers With a Hammer
Lynne Ramsay has been absent from theaters since she brought us the dark and disturbing We Need to Talk About Kevin in 2011, but when You Were Never Really Here premiered at Cannes, as the last In Competition film to screen, the whole festival was floored and it snatched up the awards for Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. The first international trailer for the movie premiered today, which hopefully means we’ll be seeing it in theaters come this fall.
Let me just say: this trailer looks terrific. I watched it three times. Phoenix looks terrifying and I would watch him swing a hammer at child traffickers any day. In the movie, Phoenix plays a troubled law enforcer who’s called on to rescue a kidnapped girl, but all, apparently, is not what it seems. Is it ever?
The brief Cannes synopsis reads:
A missing teenage girl. A brutal and tormented enforcer on a rescue mission. Corrupt power and vengeance unleash a storm of violence that may lead to his awakening.
The film will be released internationally in November, but Amazon, which is handling the US release, hasn’t announced any dates yet, so stay tuned.
