Bikini Day – When it All Began
July 5, 1946 marks the debut of the bikini. Love it or hate it, the bikini is here to stay.
According to History.com:
French designer Louis Reard unveils a daring two-piece swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Parisian showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week.
It took several years for women in the United States to wear a two-piece bathing suit in public. Now it is rare to see someone wearing a one-piece suit but it looks like they are making a comeback. Check out Macy’s Internet advertising for swimsuits.
