Perseid Meteor Shower Peeks Wednesday Night Into Thursday Morning
It's hot, and normally I would not be the first person to to tell you to go outside and do anything in this heat. But if you like gazing at the stars and watching meteor showers, this Wednesday night into Thursday morning will be the best time to watch the Perseid meteor shower!
The best times to watch is between midnight and dawn. The Perseid shower is named that because the meteors appear to emanate from the Perseus Constellation. To find it in our area look to the north then gaze upward.
There are two Perseid meteor showers each year. The one happening right now will peek this Wednesday night into Thursday morning at 3AM. If you have a clear dark sky above you there will be up to 100 meteors per hour visible. If you like watching shooting stars, almost two per minute is about as good as it gets.
If you have a smartphone or tablet, download the Google Sky mapping program that uses your GPS enabled phone to show exactly where to look.
Happy star gazing!
