What a day! Not our biggest turn out of the year with only 26 shooters for the Texarkana Gun Club's USPSA September match, but what a great day, and for me, my best performance yet.

Our numbers were down a bit due to various reasons like people travelling over the long holiday weekend, but probably one of the biggest reasons our numbers were down was the USPSA Area 4 championships taking place over the same weekend in Wichita Falls, TX.

The day was predicted to be in the mid-90's but due to the overcast that moved in shortly after we started around 10:20am, the temps stayed in the mid to upper 80's through the whole match. It's amazing how much better you can shoot when the sun is not zapping all you energy.

Congrats to the Top 5 overall shooters on the day:

  1. Bill Vickers
  2. Kelly Murray
  3. Jeff Thomas
  4. Jim Snyder
  5. Dean Ngarotata

Extra Kudos to my buddy Dean with his first top 5 finish in this, his first season of shooting this kind of competition. Well done!

Personally, it was a great day for me as well, didn't make the top 10 yet, but I came in #12 overall with my highest point total to date. For my division, I came in 2nd behind the "J" of P&J Guns, Jeff Clifton, who made his first top 10 appearance, congrats Jeff! My best achievement of the day was what is known in the shooting world as "clean". I shot a clean match, which means I had no misses! I did have 20 points deducted for hitting a No-Shoot target twice but that was it for the day. Those misses really kill your point total, 10 points each time, so to finally have a day where those deductions didn't happen is what I consider to be a major milestone. Hope I can keep it up.

In the video below you'll see how the shooting goes from a POV Action Cam I have mounted to the side of my ear protection headset. I remembered to turn on the camera in 3 of the 5 stages so good, bad or indifferent, this is what it looks like.

This weekend we're headed to Longview, TX for the "Steel Challenge" match they hold at the East Texas Pistol and Rifle Club once a month. The Steel Challenge is also a USPSA sanctioned match but it's more of a speed and accuracy match without all the movement, and yes, fun will be had by all.

As always, if your looking for a great place to shoot in the Ark-La-Tex, a local instructor or some new friends to shoot with, you’ll find it all at TexarkanaGunClub.org.
