Holy Targets! Where does the time go? Seems like just a couple of weeks ago I was dying in the heat of the first Saturday of August sunshine shooting the match, now it's the end of August and I'm just now getting the chance to sit down and write about it! Mercy me. See what happens when you take vacation time?

The Texarkana Gun Club had a nice turnout for our August 6th United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) match at the range located on FM 2149 E just north of Hwy 67. We were expecting to be down quite a few shooters simply due to the excessive heat, and while some of our usual crowd didn't make it, several new faces were on hand, some for the first time, others it may have been a while since we last saw them, but it's always great to have them back. Overall we had 28 shooters and due to the heat we only had 4 stages instead of our usual 5. The club also provided water on most of the stages so everyone had a chance to stay cool and hydrated.

Our club pro Odie DeHan was out shooting at a big 3-Gun match that weekend so the field opened up a little as to who the overall winner would be. Turns out it was one of those names you see in the top ten each month, congratulations to Lincoln Hassell who had an outstanding day of shooting. Here's your top 5 overall shooters:

  1. Hassell, Lincoln       Limited        Major    445.2998
  2. Vickers, Bill               Open             Major    435.1773
  3. Blackstone, Josh     Production Minor   415.4641
  4. Murray, Kelly           Limited        Major   407.6344
  5. Jones, Richard         Open             Major   384.8787

Everyone earned and deserves praise for shooting well and making the top 5 list but please allow me to take special notice here, at #3 is Josh Blackstone shooting a Production class gun in Minor power factor and just smoked a lot of other shooters for 3rd place overall. Way to go Josh, that's a great day of shooting my friend. Driving that CZ like a madman!

As for me, not a bad day at all, 19th out of 28 shooters with a total score of 238.9307. Not my best score to date but a significant turn-a-round from the July match which was just awful.

If you’re planning on joining us this Saturday for the September match we suggest you bring lots of water and or Gatorade-type drink to keep yourself well hydrated. If all goes according to the current weather forecast we should be in the mid-90's, not a lizard-choking 106 like it has been, but still hot. A wet towel around your neck when not shooting also helps... a lot.

As always, if your looking for a great place to shoot in the Ark-La-Tex, a local instructor or some new friends to shoot with, you’ll find it all at TexarkanaGunClub.org.
